THE STORY

There are not a lot of people who could lay claim to owning a car like this. In fact, when the numbers are broken down, it is believed this is 1 of only 2 1971 ‘Cuda 340 Convertibles ever produced painted in FJ5 Sassygrass Green with white selected for its very complimentary interior, top and billboard graphics. The latter option, of course, was never as commonplace as one might think, since many people selected to delete this option when new or quickly removed them, often due to the large displacement callouts. This car, documented by a Dave Wise report, indeed is coded V6W on the trim tag for this option. This was not a cheap car new, and that factor could well have played into its scarcity now.

Selecting the legendary Mopar small-block with its strong manners also offered excellent overall handling when installed in the Plymouth E-body, and was a more expensive option than the ‘Cuda’s standard 383 big-block was. Here the E55 340 CI V-8 engine is matching-numbers, though the Shaker hood was added later. The engine in turn is connected to the code D21 A833 New Process 4-speed manual transmission and an accompanying 8 ¾ differential. The car is coded for the 26-inch radiator and came with power brakes. Its excellent underhood detailing includes a six-cap battery.

The outside color selected was an extra-cost Hi-Impact paint style, and P37 shows the power convertible top was also stock. It covers over the H6XW premium bucket seat interior nicely, which features the center console, Hurst Pistol Grip shifter, A01 light group, Rallye dash with tach, clock and 150 MPH speedometer, and driver’s side remote mirror. As seen, the exterior trim includes the very desirable elastomeric front and rear bumpers, Shaker hood engine callouts, hood hold-down pins, dual body-color mirrors, the pedestal-mount GoWing rear spoiler, lower rocker trim, valance exit exhaust tips, and Rally wheels now wearing BF Goodrich raised white-letter radial tires. The model year remains unmistakable, but the optioning here makes this car even more unique.
